Rules of the Road

I consider myself a safe driver. I consider myself a safe pedestrian too. I make sure the pedestrians have the right away at a cross walk, when the little man on the sign says walk, I make sure the pedestrians walk first. I've noticed a lot of vehicles trying to cut off the pedestrians or not even paying attention to them. However....I noticed a lot of pedestrians lately jumping out in front of vehicles, or jay walking. As a kid, my parents taught me the rules of the road. My parents set an example. I find it quite disturbing how parents are no longer setting an example with the rules of the road. I've seen several mom's with kids strapped in their car seats in the back with a "Baby on Board" sign dangling from their back window, cutting off or almost running over a pedestrian. I had two incidents with me in the last month or so that I found quite upsetting involving kids just jumping out on the road with their parents or sauntering across a street at night in the dark almost causing an accident. the parents reaction? Well the one tyke who just decided to pedal across the street without even looking right in front of my car and not near a cross walk, had a horn honk from me, but a one finger salute from her father to me. I also got a hand wave from a father with two kids after I honked at him for just taking his time crossing the road with no respect for the safety of his kids. The age of these dads? They were in their 30's. So I ask you, what are we teaching our kids and what type of example are we setting for our kids when we accept no responsibility for our actions. You can't always say "Kids have no respect for the laws of the road" when the adults don't set them in front of their kids.

  1. something I've said quite often lately is "for a race that's supposedly the most intelligent on earth, humans are stupid creatures." I've noticed the same thing a lot myself. I get people walking out in front of me, or crossing against the light, and then reeive the one finger salute when I use my horn to let them know I'm there, or the bicyclists that ride down the middle of the road te WRONG way, and act like I'm the one in the wrong. It irritates me to no end.
